The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work and interact with one another. However, one thing that remains unchanged is our need for social interaction with other people. After all, humans are social creatures who rely on one another to thrive in group settings. This is why social isolation, or the need to be quarantined, has become one of the most upsetting repercussions of the pandemic. Due to the long-drawn effects of the pandemic, social distancing is now highly encouraged. However, it doesn’t mean we need to be socially isolated! Many of us have been keeping in touch with our family, friends and loved ones through video calls or video conferencing.
On the other hand, our seniors, who may be technologically inept compared to us, may be struggling during their home quarantine. Although we may not be physically present for them, there are ways we can help them to spend their time meaningfully. Here are four activities that our seniors in isolation can engage in.
Virtual Card and Board Games
Tabletop board and card games like Rummikub or Dominos are popular since these games allow us to have fun and bond with one another over a game. However, due to COVID restrictions during social isolation, playing a tabletop game with our friends is no longer possible.
Is that what you think? Let us tell you a piece of good news! Your loved ones who are in isolation can continue to play their favorite games with you! Thanks to technology, there are now many virtual adaptations of tabletop games. Engage your loved ones in a game or two each day! Once they are familiar with navigating the interface of the game, they can also play with other people online! The best part about virtual games is that our seniors will be able to select from a variety of games that they previously have no access to.
Movie Nights
Indulging in a movie marathon can provide a mental timeout for your senior loved ones. What movie genres do your loved ones enjoy? Do they like movie classics such as ‘Singing in the Rain’ or ‘On Golden Pond’?
Movies from past decades might even bring back nostalgic memories for our seniors. With many affordable movie streaming services online that offer free membership trials such as Netflix and Hulu, our seniors will be spoiled for choice!
Senior Exercises
With the time they have in isolation, this is a great opportunity to encourage your loved ones to start exercising, if they haven’t already done so. Exercising is especially important for seniors since adopting a good fitness regimen will allow them to keep fit.
Since the gyms are inaccessible during their time in isolation, there are simple exercises your senior loved ones can learn to do, such as different forms of stretching. You can send them senior fitness video tutorials and have a virtual workout date with them!
Arts and Crafts
Doing arts and crafts activities is a great way to pass time during isolation. Arrange for an arts and crafts courier delivery and give your loved one a surprise! There are many arts and crafts activities to choose from and we’re sure there’ll be one your senior will love.
When you make the effort to connect with your seniors during their time in isolation, it’ll have a positive impact on their health and mental well-being.
